5 Things to Consider When Choosing Your Wedding Photographer in South Wales

Choosing your wedding photographer in South Wales can feel a little overwhelming.

There are so many photographers, so many different styles and approaches, and plenty of things to compare.

So where should you actually start?

Here are my five main tips for finding the right wedding photographer for you.

1. Wedding photography is an art — explore as many photographers as you can and trust your gut

I don't think you can “math” your way to the right wedding photographer.

You can compare prices, packages, hours, albums and all the other practical stuff, but ultimately, wedding photography is an art, and art is subjective.

Spend some time exploring photographers' work. Don't just look at one or two photographs you love — immerse yourself in their overall style.

How do their photographs make you feel?

Do you love the way they see things? Can you imagine looking through your own wedding gallery and feeling the same way?

If something clicks and you find yourself thinking “I want photographs like this”, they're probably worth pursuing.

Trust your gut.

2. Get in touch and check their availability for your date

This one sounds obvious, but there's no point falling in love with a wedding photographer’s work if they're already booked for your wedding.

Just send them an email.

Tell them your date, venue and a little bit about your plans, and find out if they're available.

If they are, brilliant. Now you can start looking at the photographer properly.

3. Ask to see examples of full wedding galleries

Most photographers will naturally show you their favourite images on their website and social media.

And that's absolutely fine — you should expect to see their best work.

But that's not quite what you're paying for.

You're paying for a full wedding gallery.

You want to see how they photograph the entire story of a wedding.

How do they approach the morning preparations?

What does their ceremony coverage look like?

How do they photograph portraits, table details, guests, speeches and the dance floor?

Is there variety? Do the photographs tell a story? Does the quality stay consistent throughout the day?

There's really only one way to find out: ask to see a couple of complete galleries.

A few beautiful photographs can tell you that someone can take a beautiful photograph.

A full gallery tells you whether they can tell the story of a wedding.

4. Read their reviews and testimonials

If you love a photographer's work and they're available for your date, take a look at what their previous couples have said.

Reviews give you a completely different perspective.

The photographs show you what they create.

Testimonials can tell you what they're like to have around.

Were they relaxed and unobtrusive? Did they make couples feel comfortable? Did they offer helpful guidance when needed? Did they fit in with friends and family?

These things matter.

You're going to spend a significant part of your wedding day with this person, so the experience is almost as important as the photographs.

As one of my couples put it, having me there felt like “having another friend” — which is exactly the kind of relationship I try to build with the couples I photograph.

5. Have a quick, informal chat

If you like their work, like the reviews and they're available for your date, get in touch and have a chat.

And don't worry — this isn't a sales call.

Think of it more as a quick vibe check.

You already know you like their photographs. Now you want to find out how you feel about them.

Do you feel comfortable talking to them?

Do you like their personality?

Can you imagine having them around on your wedding day?

Because ultimately, you're not just booking a photographer.

You're inviting someone into some of the most personal, emotional and memorable moments of your life.

You want someone who will know when to blend into the background and let things happen naturally, but who can also step in and gently guide you when you need it.

Someone relaxed, informal and friendly.

Someone who you trust to tell the story of your day beautifully.

So find someone whose work you love, whose approach you trust, whose reviews make you feel confident — and whose company you genuinely enjoy.

And if it feels right?

That's probably your answer.
